“We’re all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is our best to relish this remarkable ride.”
- About Time (movie)

The ordinary days

Motherhood calls us to an impossible task. We shape the minds of tiny humans, love them, raise them, protect them, all while giving up so very much of ourselves. We know how quickly the years will pass, and yet the exhaustion and frustration of our busy lives leave us wishing the days away.

But the time does pass, through the good seasons and the hard, through the seasons of joy and the seasons of grief. Every day, our children get a little older, a little bigger…even when we’re not looking.

The truth is, you’re not going to enjoy every moment. But one day, many years from now, you will see a picture from this beautiful season, and you will see what your children saw: that you were a magical being, the center of a small person’s universe, that even on your hardest days, they always knew they were loved.

I want to show you how precious these ordinary days are.

the joy in the chaos

Through my own photography, I have seen so many things I was missing. I have seen the joy in the midst of even our hardest times. I have seen the way my daughter will remember her childhood – full of magic and love and barefoot dance parties. And I have also seen the profound effect on my daughter when she sees these images, when she sees the story of her childhood played back for her. It is the history of her, the history of her family, that she can hold in her hands.

My daughter has a baby doll, ever so creatively named, “Baby.” Baby has. been a part of our family since my daughter was a toddler, and Baby has lived a life of adventure. She’s visited Hawaii and Disneyland, almost been abandoned on several harrowing occasions, and has slept in bed with all of us every single night. One day, I looked at Baby’s well-worn face and I had a terrible thought: one day, this ragged little doll will end up in a box. Put away into storage, mostly forgotten. We might mention her from time to time when my little girl is grown – “Do you remember Baby?” we’ll ask. And we’ll laugh, but my heart will break a little, because the days of Baby – these sweet, frustrating, precious, exhausting days, will be over and gone.

Since then, it has been my mission to photograph Baby, being snuggled and hugged and lugged about. Such an ordinary little thing, and yet so terribly important to my Mama heart.

This is what I want to do for you. I want you to remember your ordinary. I want you to remember the thousands of little stories that might seem so unimportant to the rest of the world, but are everything to you. I want you to remember tiptoes as your children reach for that cup they’re probably going to spill. I want you to remember the way their little fingers grasp your hair. Most of all, I want you to remember how it feels to be Mom to these little humans – sometimes shattered, sometimes exhausted, but always so very needed and so very loved.

It won’t always be like this. You deserve to be seen. You deserve to remember.
